Welfare checks in Virginia Beach part of Hurricane Matthew relief efforts

THANKS FOR JOINING US TONIGHT – I’M BRANDI CUMMINGS. IT’S BEEN A WEEK SINCE HURRICANE MATTHEW – AND PARTS OF OUR AREA CONTINUE TO PICK UP THE PIECES. WITH AS MUCH RAIN AS A LOT OF PLACES SAW – IT MAY TAKE A WHILE. THAT’S WHY VIRGINIA BEACH POLICE WERE DOING WELFARE CHECKS THIS AFTERNOON. 10 ON YOUR SIDE’S MARIELENA BALOURIS CAUGHT UP WITH THOSE OFFICERS – AND YOU’RE SAYING – THOSE PEOPLE’S RESPONSES ARE MIXED. BRANDI – ITS UNBELIEVABLE TO SEE HOW MUCH CLEANUP REMAINS IN SOME OF THESE NEIGHBORHOODS. AS YOU CAN SEE THERE ARE LITERALLY PILES OF DAMAGED THINGS SITTING OUT IN FRONT OF PEOPLES HOUSES. WEVE SEEN EVERYTHING FROM SOFAS TO MATTRESSES TO EVEN PHOTO ALBUMS. SO ITS JUST REALLY SAD TO SEE THE DEVASTATION MATTHEW CAUSED. NOW POLICE WERE OUT IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD TODAY GOING DOOR TO DOOR CHECKING ON RESIDENTS. THEY SAY THIS WAS ONE OF MANY NEIGHBORHOODS IN THE CITY THAT THEY WOULD BE CHECKING. THEYRE MAKING SURE PEOPLE ARE SAFE AND ALSO GIVING THEM INFORMATION ON FEMA WITH TODAY SAY THEYRE HAPPY TO BE OUT HERE HELPING, BUT ITS TOUGH TO SEE THE DEVASTATION. COMING UP TONIGHT AT 10 AND 11 — HEAR FROM ONE NEIGHBOR WHO SAYS HE FEELS LIKE THE CITY WASNT ENOUGH HELPING RESIDENTS WITH THE FLOODING. AND WE WILL HAVE MORE FROM THE VIRGINIA BEACH CITY MANAGER ON WHAT THE CITY IS DOING WITH CLEANUP. AND THE LESSONS THEYVE LEARNED MOVING AND THE LESSONS THEYVE LEARNED MOVING FORWARD. IN VIRGINIA BEACH, IM MARIELENA BALOURIS TEN ON YOUR SIDE.
