Veteran Community Care: Indian Health Service/Tribal Health Program

VA partners with the Indian
Health Service and Tribal Health Program to provide eligible
Alaska Native and American Indian Veterans with easier
access to health care. The goal of this partnership is to
provide Veterans with high-quality health care in a
convenient, culturally appropriate setting; support
excellent care coordination and collaboration; and promote
resource-sharing between health care facilities. To achieve
these goals, VA works with the Indian Health Service (IHS) and
Tribal Health Program (THP) to reimburse the cost of direct
care provided to eligible Veterans at local IHS and THP
health care facilities. Through this partnership, eligible
Alaska Native and American Indian Veterans can expect the
following benefits. Coverage of the full medical benefits
package: VA reimburses the costs of direct health services
provided in VA’s medical benefits package. Please note:
The VA does not reimburse services that are excluded from
the medical benefits package or for which the Veteran does not
meet qualifying criteria. Your choice of provider: Veterans can
choose to receive care from an IHS, THP, or VA medical
facility. Prescription coverage: VA reimburses IHS and THP
medical facilities for the cost of prescription medication that
are part of VA’s formulary. No authorization needed: Veterans
do not need to get authorization from VA before receiving care
from a participating IHS or THP medical facility. No copayment:
VA copayments do not apply for Veterans receiving care from a
participating IHS or THP medical facility. No outstanding
balances: IHS and THP medical facilities bill third parties
prior to billing VA. VA is responsible for the balance
remaining after third-party reimbursements. Veterans are
eligible for care through this partnership if they are eligible
for health care services from an IHS or THP medical facility,
enrolled in the VA health care system and eligible for medical
services. To make an appointment, Veterans can
directly contact their local IHS or THP medical facility. After a
Veteran receives care, IHS and THP medical facilities submit
claims in accordance to the applicable VA IHS/THP
reimbursement agreement. Reimbursement is different from
other VA programs, including different payment rates. To
