NHS Health Check: Nichola’s story | NHS

NICHOLA’S STORY I was always conscious of the fact,
being overweight… NICHOLA
45 YEARS OLD ..that I could have cholesterol problems
or heart problems. But it’s actually
getting to do something about it, going to get a check done
to see if you have. You just sort of put it to the back of
your mind and hope it goes away. Health checks were available at work. They explained that it was for
people over 40, certain conditions. And because it was available, I wasn’t
having to go to a doctor’s surgery, I could just nip out of the office
for a half an hour check. It was a no-brainer, really,
to go and have one done. The health check nurse explained
that I could change my cholesterol by doing more exercise to
higher my good cholesterol and to change my diet to
lower my bad cholesterol. I was really surprised because
I thought it might have to be, that my cholesterol was high,
that I would have to take medication. And as it happened,
no, I didn’t have to. It was just a lifestyle change. I used to come to work on my bike
occasionally. But since the health check, I decided to
come to work on my bike every day. And I also joined a boot camp,
which was twice a week. Then, since Christmas, I started the NHS Choices
Couch to 5K running programme. I’m now on week nine,
and I’m running for 30 minutes non-stop, which I didn’t think I would ever do
before I had the health check. Also, since the health check,
I’ve lost a stone and a half in weight, so I’m really pleased. Most of my family,
people who I don’t see for a few weeks, they’re always commenting on
how good I look, I’ve lost weight. And I feel more happy in myself as well. FOR MORE INFORMATION GO TO
